HCC First XI Premiers 2020/21
Date of Event Hawthorn Cricket Club: Sun Mar 14, 2021 7:00PM

Hawthorn First XI are the A-Turf Premiers for 2020/21, defeating Mulgrave by seven wickets at Rathmines Road Reserve.

The Hawks bounce straight back into Wright Shield with just one season in A-Turf. The long awaited premiership breaks a 15 year drought for the First XI and is the 8th, 1st XI Flag in the Club’s history.

It was a great team effort across both finals, overcoming a highly determined Boronia in the last over of the Semi Final. The Hawks passed Boronia at 7/160. Standouts were Angus McIlroy with 3 catches, a stumping and a run out assist behind the stumps, opener Scott Caulfield with 44 and a hero effort from Nigel Van Der Wert 47* at the end.

The Grand Final saw Mulgrave sent in with a big storm brewing. When the heavens finally ended play they were 5/119 after 28 overs. Rob Tongue was superb with 2 for 5 off 5 overs, before a groin strain saw him leave the field. Scotty Caulfield picked up two vital wickets, both bowled and Nigel Van Der Wert had Mulgrave’s top scorer De Silva caught at deep backward square for 55.

Play was delayed until 2pm on Day 2 and the bowlers wrapped up the last 5 Mulgrave wickets in 10 overs. Ushchi Rajapaksha picked up the first, Nigel Van Der Wert added two in two balls to finish with 3/21 and Tom Barel picked up a valuable 2/9, leaving Nigel on a hattrick, first ball next season!

The 150 run target for victory saw openers Cody Kauter and Scott Caulfield face a barrage of short, express bowling. At 2/29 Rob Ryan was joined by Ollie Chauhan (46) and the pair put on a very disciplined 120 run partnership to steer the team to victory. Ollie made way in the 37th over for "the G.O.A.T.” Rob Tongue to finish the job (with Ollie as his runner) and just one run required. That took one ball to achieve. However Rob, caught up in the emotion of the win, also hobbled to the other end and was run out after the victory was completed!

Rob Ryan was awarded Man of the Match with a chanceless 62 not out. Celebrations continued into the evening on our home turf.

Congratulations on a fantastic season to our First XI and Skipper, Dale Wilkinson.

Go Hawks - Play Together, Win Together.
